Database Utilities ‣ Backup

The backup screen allows you to select databases and backup the databases to a file location.

ODBC Connection:

This drop down allows you to select the database you wish to backup. The database will keep running while the backup is in progress.

Backup to:

This section allows you to select the folder where you wish to save the backup files. Backups always happen on the server so the backup location will end up being on the server.

Last backup location:
This will backup to the previously remembered backup location. If it’s the first time running a backup, this location will ot be valid.
Default location:
The default location will be a backup folder on the server. When selecting this option, enter a name for the backup in the entry box to the right. eg. beforepay3105. The backup will be given this name.
Custom locations:
The custom location option allows you to select the folder where the backup will be saved. nb. The location will be from the server’s point of view. Use the browse button to select a folder.
A Test Database:
You have an option when running a backup on the server. If a backup test database is selected, that test database will be copied, stopped and relaced by the backup database.
Append date to filename:

When you select this option, the current date will be appended to the name given to the backup. Each backup has to have a unique name, this option is useful for ensuring all backups are unique.

Compress to Zip file:

Selecting this option will compress the backup as a zip file. This will take slightly longer, but will use drastically less disk space.

Don’t backup the log file:

This option will not backup the log file. A database has a log of transactions that is used for recovery purposes. Selecting this will not backup the log resulting in a quicker backup.

The log file should normally by backed up, so you would not normally select this option.

Backup location:

This box displays the location of the backup based on the above selections. This should be a valid path on the server or backups may not occur.

Backup button:

This button begins the backup process.
